Dual-Piston Technology for Precision Liquid Handling
Two pistons can do more than double the moving parts. When their motion and effective areas are designed together, the system can deliver two very different behaviors: fine differential metering and stronger single-mode flow.

What the two pistons contribute
The distinguishing feature is not simply having two pistons, but how their displaced volumes interact. In coordinated motion, opposing displacements leave a small net output. Changing the relative motion produces a different effective displacement or flow behavior.
The engineering trade-off
A single very small piston can be mechanically delicate and sensitive to sealing tolerances. A differential architecture uses larger effective areas and relies on a controlled difference to meter small amounts. It introduces its own design questions—synchronization, dimensional accuracy, seal stability and calibration—and should be judged by measured results.
High flow without losing fine metering
A liquid-handling system often needs gentle, precise aspiration followed by quick dispense, wash or prime operations. In DRD’s implementation, different piston behaviors are used for those different tasks, offering an engineering path toward contact-free release.
From mechanism to instrument
The technology appears in different DRD product families, including manual differential pipettors, OEM syringe and pump modules, and automated 96-channel systems. Each application places different demands on size, control and consumables; a shared mechanical principle does not imply identical specifications.
For a system-level decision, compare these principles against the performance data and technical documentation supplied for the particular DRD product. See the related DRD product and discuss the intended application with the engineering team.

Frequently asked questions
Are the pistons identical in diameter?
No. Their differing effective areas are fundamental to obtaining a small net displacement during coordinated motion.
Does dual-piston mean twice the aspiration volume?
No. The relevant aspiration volume is the net displacement generated by their combined action.
Where can the technology be integrated?
Potential pathways include standalone pipetting equipment, OEM metering modules and automated liquid-handling platforms.
